Editorial & Fiber Testing Standards
Last Updated: October 2026
1. Craft Yarn Council (CYC) Integration
All categories on YarnYardCalc (#0 Lace through #7 Jumbo) adhere to the standardized guidelines published by the Craft Yarn Council. We regularly verify our linear-density estimates against commercial skein ball bands from major international yarn manufacturers.
2. Scale Testing & Density Verification
To ensure accurate yardage predictions, our fiber laboratory calibrates kitchen and jewelry scales to 0.1-gram precision. We measure average length per gram ($yds/g$) across:
- 100% Superwash Merino and Non-Superwash Wool
- 100% Cotton (Mercerized and Unmercerized Kitchen Cotton)
- 100% Premium and Budget Acrylic Fibers
- Chenille and Polyester Blanket Core Yarns
3. The 10% Safety Factor
In our blanket and sweater estimators, we deliberately engineer a 10% safety margin into every project calculation. This accounts for:
- 4" × 4" gauge swatch yarn consumption
- Tails consumed when casting on, binding off, and joining new skeins
- Slight variations in maker hand tension from start to finish
4. Correction Policy
If you identify any technical calculation discrepancy or find that a specific indie yarn base consistently deviates from our ratios, please submit your findings to editorial@yarnyardcalc.com with your yarn brand, full skein weight, and yardage.
