🧶 Our Craft Mission

Empowering Makers to Build Stash Confidently

YarnYardCalc was born from a universal crafter frustration: losing at "yarn chicken" with 3 rows left of a baby blanket, or discovering an unlabelled skein of gorgeous wool with no idea if it’s enough for a sweater.

Why Weight-Based Yardage Estimation Works

Every fiber spinner and industrial yarn mill produces yarn with strict density metrics. While ball band paper wraps get torn off and discarded, the physical density of the yarn fibers remains constant.

By placing your leftover yarn ball on an inexpensive digital kitchen scale and categorizing its thickness (via Wraps Per Inch or visual gauge), mathematical models can calculate the remaining linear yardage within a ±3–5% margin of accuracy.

⚖️

CYC Standard Compliance

All our algorithms conform to the Craft Yarn Council (CYC) standards for yarn weight classifications, wraps per inch (WPI), and standard needle/hook pairing recommendations.

📐

10% Safety Buffer Engineering

Unlike rough internet rules-of-thumb, our blanket and afghan calculators automatically factor in tension variance, seam joining tails, and border rounds so you never run short.

Our Editorial Team & Testing Process

Our tools and reference guides are authored and reviewed by veteran crocheters, technical knitters, and fiber craft pattern designers. We periodically test commercial yarns across leading manufacturers (Lion Brand, Red Heart, Caron, Bernat, Cascade, and indie hand-dyers) to calibrate density benchmarks.
